CareSource Payment Clawbacks

CareSource has made a swift decision to cut reimbursements for services and demand repayment from providers. CareSource is providing little or even NO explanation.

All across Ohio, behavioral health practices are sharing they are experiencing anywhere from $6,000 to in excess of $100,00 of unexpected repayments demands. The financial burden on providers by Caresource is unfair and has major repercussions for counselors and other providers.

The Ohio Counseling Association is aware of the CareSource payment clawbacks. OCA is investigating. OCA is advocating, for you and for all of our professionals.

The OCA offers the following steps you can take today:

  1. Request specificity and documentation immediately.

  2. Review your contract and file a formal dispute.

  3. Consult legal counsel and consider collective action.

  4. Escalate to oversight and advocacy bodies.

Counselors are organizing. Join the conversation. Counselors and social workers are coming together and coordinating virtual meetings to collaborate and plan advocacy efforts.

The National Association of Social Workers, Ohio Chapter (NASW Ohio) has created a petition which will be presented to the Ohio Department of Medicaid, which providers, organizations, and community members can sign, to let your voice be counted.

Collaborative opportunities are being shared through the OCA ListServ.

If you have not already joined the ListServ, subscribe with the email address you want to send from. Then, you can email ocamembers@listserv.kent.edu to share meeting opportunities with members.

Please note, meetings are not hosted, sponsored by, or affiliated with the OCA.

You can sign the petition by clicking on this link:

Members of the OCA, the NWOCA, and the public, can join with the NASW Ohio to raise your voice in protest on Friday, May 1st at 3pm, outside of the CareSource headquarters in Dayton, Ohio.

If you plan to join the protest, please RSVP at naswoh.org/CareSourceProtest.

Check out the NWOCA Facebook page for more details on the action steps suggested by the OCA, in a post we shared on April 24th.

Step up and do your part to stop the CareSource clawbacks. Spread the word by sharing our NWOCA Facebook post, the OCA Facebook post, the NASW Ohio petition, and the NASW Ohio press release with other providers, organizations, and members of the public.
